1st Round
- 31st Overall
TODD HEAP - TE - Arizona State -- 6'5 - 235 - 4.65 Heap fell to them and Baltimore picked him up right away. He will be worked in as a rookie but his real contribution is as Shannon Sharpe's heir. Just another weapon for new QB Elvis Grbac. |

2nd Round - 62nd Overall
GARY BAXTER - S - Baylor -- 6'1 - 200 - 4.5 A 1st Round prospect for much of the year but a sub par postseason dropped him. It's my guess that Baltimore will have him play Safety but he was mostly a corner in college. A nice pick here. |

3rd Round - 92nd Overall
CASEY RABACH - C - Wisconsin -- 6'4 - 295 - 5.2 With Jeff Mitchell a Free Agent, Baltimore really needed to find a Center. They had their choice of Hamilton, Garza and Rabach and the Badger won out. He'll get a chance to start. |

4th Round - 136th Overall
EDGERTON HARTWELL - LB - Western Illinois -- 6'1 - 240 - 4.75 The last thing this team needs is a middle linebacker but Hartwell is a good one. Ray Lewis' understudy has the toughness that the Raven defense displayed and should be an excellent Special Teamer. |
|
5th Round - 161th Overall
CHRIS BARNES - RB - New Mexico State -- 6'0 - 210 - 4.5 Barnes had a nice Blue-Gray game and was a real sleeper coming into the draft. With Priest Holmes leaving, the spot for Jamal Lewis' backup was open, until Barnes was drafted of course. |

6th Round - 194th Overall
JOE MAESE - LS - New Mexico -- 6'4 - 240 - NA In a bizzare pick, the Ravens used this 6th Rounder on a Long Snapper. Maese will be nothing else, but he'll at least see action as a rookie. They probably could have waited on this pick though. |
|
7th Round - 231st Overall
DWAYNE MISSOURI - DE - Northwestern -- 6'5 - 260 - 5.0 Defensive End wasn't a big need for Baltimore so it may be tough for Missouri to make the squad. He may have to spend a year on the practice squad. |
FINAL GRADE: B+ | I like what they did, although I'm a little surprised they didn't draft a WR. This is a team which needs weapons. Heap certainly is a weapon although I don't think he was necessarily their biggest need. He was one of the best players on the board though. Gary Baxter was a nice pick at the end of the 2nd. Casey Rabach filled a need. Edge Hartwell is a good pick but I'm not sure why Baltimore felt inclined to take a LB. Maese will make the team as a long snapper, and Missouri will have his work cut out for him to try to make the team. The sleeper to watch is Chris Barnes, he could fill the Priest Holmes role very well. |
Chris Redman |
The two 1st Rounders, RB Jamal Lewis and WR Travis Taylor made contributions as rookies. Taylor's season was cut short by an injury but he will come back and push for the starting job this year. Lewis was one of the leagues best rookies and he was a big part of the Ravens' late season surge. With Priest Holmes likely to leave, Lewis has the backfield all to himself. QB Chris Redman is clearly the QB of the future but how soon is that? Probably not this year at least. DE Adalius Thomas showed the pass rushing ability that made him a great college player. He will again be a situational pass rusher. DT Cedric Woodard is just there for depth. |
