1st Round
- 11th Overall
DAN MORGAN - LB - Miami -- 6'2 - 235 - 4.55 This was the playmaking LB Carolina had been targeting all along. Thus they passed on Kenyatta Walker and got their difference maker on defense. Morgan is the type of player they needed. |
|
2nd Round - 44th Overall
KRIS JENKINS - DT - Maryland -- 6'5 - 305 - 4.95 Carolina continues to build their defense, choosing Jenkins over his teammate RB Lamont Jordan. Jenkins may have to step in as a rookie because of the uncertainty of Sean Gilbert and Eric Swann. |
|
3rd Round - 74th Overall
STEVE SMITH - WR - Utah -- 5'8 - 185 - 4.4 Smith should step in right away as a return man, especially if Michael Bates does not return. He also will probably be the team's fourth receiver. The three in front of him are bigger but Smith's speed is his greatest asset. |
|
4th Round - 106th Overall
CHRIS WEINKE - QB - Florida State -- 6'4 - 238 - 5.05 This was a great pick for Carolina. It's entirely possible that Weinke could start ahead of Dameyune Craig and Jeff Lewis. The Heisman Trophy winner Weinke, should also be happy about this situation. |
|
5th Round - 143rd Overall
JARROD COOPER - S - Kansas State -- 6'0 - 215 - 4.55 He'll come up and hit and I think that's what Carolina is looking for. Cooper will have last year's two top picks, Rashard Anderson and Deon Grant to contend with but he's a better tackler than both of them. |
|
6th Round - 175th Overall
DEE BROWN - RB - Syracuse -- 5'10 - 200 - 4.6 Carolina needs to decide on a feature back. Brown probably won't be that guy but he does give them an option as a third down back. They probably waited too long to address this glaring need. |
|
7th Round - 211th Overall
LOUIS WILLIAMS - G - Louisiana State -- 6'4 - 300 - 5.44 Pretty nice pick here. Williams is a strong player with good work ethic and though he's not a good athlete, he should be able to win a spot on this team. |
|
7th Round - 227th Overall
MIKE ROBERG - TE - Idaho -- 6'4 - 255 - 4.7 Roberg was a name that started climbing up the boards in the offseason. He's going to have a great teacher in Wesley Walls and may the future at TE when Walls retires. |
FINAL GRADE:B | GOOD PICKS: Morgan,
Jenkins, Weinke, Cooper
REACHES: Smith STAR OF THE CLASS: Morgan SLEEPER: Roberg |
Deon Grant |
S Deon Grant returns from a knee injury to challenge in the secondary. Had it not been for poor tackling, Grant could have easily been a first rounder based on his ball skills. He and last years 1st rounder CB Rashard Anderson should mature this year and solidify the Panther secondary a bit more. LB Lester Townes started as a rookie and was a nice surprise. DT Alvin McKinley was used sparingly in his rookie season but with the Panther's need for D-Linemen he could get more playing time this year. OT Leander Jordan was considered a project and he still is. Although still learning, he may see more time. Jeno James should continue to start. |
