GATORS
This season
had so much optimism going in but recently seven players were suspended
for academics and QB Rex Grossman is out for the Spring for possibly the
same thing. Still, Steve Spurrier has a talented bunch. The fruits of a
great 2000 recruiting class should be sweet to Spurrier this year.
PLAYERS
TO WATCH
A QB controversy is
brewing in the swamp. With Jesse Palmer graduating, Spurrier has highly
touted Brock Berlin and Rex Grossman who ended the season as the starter.
Berlin was rated as one of the top three players by every recruiting anaylist
you could think of but Grossman played very well when he got to start last
season. Berlin will take most of the reps in the spring because Grossman
has been suspended but will be back for the season. The Gators are set
at Wideout. So.Jabar Gaffney had a great freshman season and is being touted
as a Heisman candidate for the coming year. He will be joined by his mate
from last year, Reche Caldwell and Taylor Jacobs has some talent at the
three spot. At RB, it is Robert Gillespe's job to lose. On the line, Kenyatta
Walker is gone so all eyes will be on So. Shannon Snell. The 6'6, 320 Lb
Snell will have to fill Walker's shoes and has the talent to do it. The
bigger hole may be the one left by Za Zadelis at C. At TE, Kirk Wells and
Aaron Walker both return. Over on defense, the Gators lost their top three
interior lineman. Someone will have to step up, look for Jr.Arpedge Rolle.
On the edge, Alex Brown is a top pass rusher. At the other end, a good
possibility is So.Darrell Lee. A 6'5, 240 Lb athletic freak who has similar
talent to Jevon Kearse. Another Soph, LB Travis Harris (6'3, 220, 4.5)
also looks to start. Having Andra Davis back to join Marques Oquendo-Johnson
makes the Florida LB corps one of the nation's best. As for the DBs
they all return. Bennie Alexander, Robert Cromartie and Lito Sheppard are all good corners it will be an interesting battle for the starting spots. At Safety, Marquand Manuel and Daryl Dixon return but watch out for So.Tre Orr who could become a star. Both Florida's Kicker and Punter graduated so finding replacements will be key. Look for Lito Sheppard to be a great return man again. |
