TEXAS
LONGHORNS
Mack Brown has to like what he sees. He has two QBs returning, three excellent receivers, an All-American candidate at CB and an excellent recruiting class. However, the whole season may rest on Brown's decision on which of the two QBs will be the starter.
PLAYERS
TO WATCH
Spring and Summer will be telling times for the Longhorns. A QB will have to emerge as the starter. Chris Sims is the early favorite. He has the talent to succeed. This should be his breakout season. However, Major Applewhite has always been steady and will give Sims a run with talented So. Chance Mock waiting in the wings. No controversy at WR. Sophs, BJ Johnson, Roy Williams and Sloan Thomas are probably the best trio in the nation. Williams is a big time NFL prospect who has been compared to Randy Moss. At RB, Hodges Mitchell is gone but look out for incoming Fr. Cedric Benson. A record smasher in the prep ranks, Benson should be a big time back. Benson won't have Leonard Davis (who is in the NFL) to run behind but he should still have holes to run through. Even without 6'6, 350 Lb Leonard, this will still be one of the biggest lines in the country. Andrew Kirk-Hughes has NFL eyes on him, and Matt Anderson as well as Derrick Dockery are returning starters. Freshmen Jonathon Scott, Terrance Young and William Winston are all huge and may fill some spots. On defense, the tandem of Hampton and Rogers are gone but the D should still be fine. Cory Redding becomes the immediate focal point in the front four. A highly touted recruit, this will have to be Redding's year to step it up. Complementing him at End wil be Sr.Jermain Anderson. The LBs are all returning from a year ago. DD Lewis is the ring leader. He sets the tempo for this defense, his job will be harder without those big DTs up front though. Joining Lewis at LB are Tyrone Jones and Everick Rawls. Watch out for recruit Yamil LeBron. In the secondary, CB Quentin Jammer could have been a first round pick but he returned. Now heis an All American candidate and has a chance to be a Top 10 pick. Ahmad Brooks and Ervis Hill are two experienced CBs who will battle for the other starting spot. At Safety, Lee Jackson returns but there is a vacancy at the other safety spot. Look for talented freshman Brian Carter to get a look. On Special Teams, replacing both Kicker Kris Stockton and Punter Ryan Long will be tough. |
