2001 HEISMAN TROPHY CANDIDATES

The Favorites

1.DAMIEN ANDERSON
RUNNING BACK - Northwestern
SENIOR

Could lead the nation in rushing this year. Northwestern's offense will go through Anderson and he will get plenty of oppurtunities to put up huge numbers. At the very least, Anderson should be invited to the Downtown Athletic Club. He looks like he's going to have a big year and is the odds-on favorite at this point.

2.WOODROW DANTZLER
QUARTERBACK - Clemson
SENIOR

Dantzler was on track top win it last year until he was injured and Clemson lost a few games. He's back this year and expect more dazzling plays both running and passing from Dantzler. Very similar to past Heisman winner Charlie Ward. Could rush for 1,000 and pass for 3,000 this year barring injury.

3.LEE SUGGS
RUNNING BACK - Virgina Tech
JUNIOR

A touchdown machine. Suggs is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He has a great combination of size and speed which should enable him to take on more carries with Michael Vick in the NFL. Expect Frank Beamer and the Hokies to lean heavily on Suggs this year, and expect him to come through.

4.ANTWAAN RANDEL-EL
WIDE RECEIVER - Indiana
Senior

A switch from QB won't hamper his ability to dazzle and excite. Expect to see Randel-El on reverses, double reverses, reverse passes, options and all sorts of other gimmicks. If he didn't play for Indiana, he'd probably be the favorite.

5.ANTONIO BRYANT
WIDE RECEIVER - Pittsburgh
Junior

He's the Belitnikoff Winner and probably the best Wide Receiver in College Football. He has more polish than many NFL receivers and he's in an offense where he is the only weapon. Sounds good. Bryant will get the ball a lot this year. We'll see how he handles not having Latef Grim on the other side but he should be just fine.

The Other Contenders

ERIC CROUCH - QB - Nebraska      pictured
He's a great runner and developing as a passer. Will put up big numbers but how far he goes depends on how far the team goes.

GEORGE GODSEY - QB - Georgia Tech
Speaking of big numbers, if Godsey recovers from an injury, expect him and a pair of good receivers to light it up.

KEN SIMONTON - RB - Oregon State
He's going to generate some buzz. Don't be surprised if he leads the nation in rushing and if the Beavers do well again...who knows.

CEDRIC COBBS - RB - Arkansas   pictured
He ran a 4.25 at the Arkansas pro day, that's proof enough that his knee feels fine. He'll be the Hogs' big weapon.

KEN DORSEY - QB - Miami
If he leads the Canes to another BCS bowl, he'll be in the spotlight but who will he be throwing to?

The Darkhorses

BYRON LEFTWICH - QB - Marshall          pictured
Has taken over for Chad Pennington and last season put up some huge numbers. Expect more of the same and a MAC Championship.

JASON THOMAS - QB - UNLV
He's not getting much press but he's a potential top 10 pick and a Daunte Culpepper clone; and he's only going to get better.

ELI MANNING - QB - Mississippi
Guess what, Peyton's little brother has some game too. After lighting up the Spring, expect the folks in Oxford to make a push.

ANQUAN BOLDIN - QB/WR - Florida State
No matter where he is, Boldin is going to use his 4.39 speed to make big plays for the Seminoles.

JULIUS PEPPERS - DE - North Carolina       pictured
Probably the only defensive player capable of even sniffing the award. He has a chance to have a 20 sack season.

Carson Palmer - QB - USC
TJ Duckett - RB - Michigan State
Marcus Houston - RB - Colorado
Roy Williams - WR - Texas
Deshaun Foster - RB - UCLA
Chris Sims - QB - Texas
Ron Johnson - WR - Minnesota
Marquise Walker - WR - Michigan
Brock Berlin - QB - Florida
Cecil Sapp - RB - Colorado State
