The Pick: MIKE PEARSON - OT - Florida
WHY THEY'RE #17 Not enough firepower to be a real contender.
WHY TAKE PEARSON? With Richmond Webb leaving, the Left Tackle spot
in Miami is wide open. Though the fins have a nice young tackle in Brandon Winey, Pearson is a stud who has been compared to Toni Boseli. You don't pass on that type of player.
The Pick: EDWARD REED - S - Miami
WHY THEY'RE #18 Denver and Oakland will make a playoff run tough
WHY TAKE REED? The secondary is the weak link on a talented
defense. Marcus Robertson was signed but he isn't getting any younger and new talent is needed. Reed is a ballhawk who will help the 'Hawks' turnover ratio out.
The Pick: SALEEM RASHEED - LB - Alabama
WHY THEY'RE #19 They'll battle Miami for a Wild Card spot.
WHY TAKE RASHEED? James Farrior hasn't panned out like a 1st Round
pick is supposed to. James Darling is a nice player but neither of those guys have the impact ability Rasheed has. He's been the most consistent player on an up and down Alabama team. He's only a junior too.
The Pick: DENNIS WEATHERSBY - CB - Oregon State
WHY THEY'RE #20 Favre will carry them as far as he can go.
WHY WEATHERSBY? Mike McKenzie has been a nice surprise at corner
and Tyrone Williams is a solid player but neither is a true shutdown corner. With Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson, Marcus Robinson and Germane Crowell lurking in the divison, some size is needed and Dennis is 6'1.
The Pick: LEVI JONES - OT - Arizona State
WHY THEY'RE #21 Don't expect another SB but this is a playoff team
WHY TAKE JONES? The Giants have a 38 year old Left Tackle in
Lomas Brown. They need an heir for him and the 6'6, 300 lb Jones is a good candidate. He's very athletic for such a big guy and he'll need it to protect Kerry Collins' blind side.
The Pick: MIKE RUMPH - CB - Miami
WHY THEY'RE #22 A good season from Kordell could go a long way.
WHY TAKE RUMPH? The Steelers didn't draft a corner at all last year
and that was viewed as one of their biggest needs. DeWayne Washington and Chad Scott are wrapped up for another few years but Rumph would be tough to pass on. He would bring some size (6'2) to the Steeler secondary.
The Pick: TONIU FONOTI - G - Nebraska
WHY THEY'RE #23 Should give Baltimore a run for the AFC Central.
WHY TAKE FONOTI? At some point, it's going to happen. It just has to.
Bruce Matthews will retire, and when he does, Tennessee will need to find a replacement. Only a junior, Fonoti has the intensity and natural skill to project as the top guard in the draft.
The Pick: ROY WILLIAMS - S - Oklahoma
WHY THEY'RE #24 Bad defense will kill any Super Bowl hope.
WHY TAKE WILLIAMS? It's no secret that the Vikes need defense. Their
secondary especially needs the help. Williams is a tough hitter who supports the run well. The current starter, Tyrone Carter is a heady player but lacks the size to play the run.
The Pick: ANTONIO BRYANT - WR - Pittsburgh
WHY THEY'RE #25 Should contend but passing Oakland will be tough
WHY TAKE BRYANT? He's this year's Randy Moss. This guy should be
long gone by now. He's a top 5 talent but he's had too many off the field incidents. His potential to be a head case will scare off many teams. Still, Bryant is a phenomenal talent and someone will take a chance.
The Pick:LEE MAYS - WR - Texas El-Paso
WHY THEY'RE #26 Saints lack a noticeable flaw and will make a run.
WHY TAKE MAYS? The Saints' starting combo of Joe Horn and Albert
Connell is solid but they still need a star. Mays is 6'3 and runs a 4.4, he's a great athlete but he's raw. The Saints can afford to wait on someone like Mays and he could pay off big time down the road.
The Pick: TERRANCE METCALF - G - Mississippi
WHY THEY'RE #27 Ravens have the pieces to make another run.
WHY TAKE METCALF? The Right Guard spot is a weak link on the Raven
Offensive Line. Metcalf is an excellent run blocker who can fill that spot perfectly. The Ravens also could look to add a WR but unless someone slips down, don't expect them to pick someone who can't contribute right away.
The Pick: LEE SUGGS - RB - Virgina Tech
WHY THEY'RE #28 McNabb will carry this team but NFC is top heavy
WHY TAKE SUGGS? When a talent like Lee Suggs is staring you in the
face at #28, you take him. Especially if Duce Staley doesn't come back well from injury. Suggs has all the ability to be a feature back but he is pushed down by a strong Running Back class.
The Pick: MICHAEL HAYES - WR - Southern
WHY THEY'RE #29 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Bucs and Rams
WHY TAKE HAYES? Even with the addition of Keyshawn Johnson, the
Tampa Bay receiving corps is still pretty average. Neither Jacquez Green or Reidel Anthony are starter material. At 6'5, Hayes is comparable to Kansas City's Sylvester Morris.
The Pick: ROCKY CALMUS - LB - Oklahoma
WHY THEY'RE #30 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Colts and Raiders
WHY TAKE CALMUS? The Colts need to take the best defensive player
available. While they have a middle man in Rob Morris, Calmus can play the outside and would add more leadership to a defense which needs some help
If not Calmus then Alex Brown could make sense here.
The Pick:JOEY HARRINGTON - QB - Oregon
WHY THEY'RE #31 They have all the pieces to be super this year.
WHY HARRINGTON? I know they drafted Marques Tuiasosopo but
there is reasonable doubt as to whether he's the future of this team. They need someone like Harrington, a tall pocket passer who is a proven leader. He gets the nod over an unproven talent like Carson Palmer here.
The Pick: ALEX BROWN - DE - Florida
WHY THEY'RE #32 They fixed the defense and Kurt Warner is back.
WHY TAKE BROWN? As much as they improved the defense, the Rams
still lost Kevin Carter and a pass rusher is needed. So the Rams turn to another Florida Gator in Brown. He's small for a full time DE but he can get to the passer.
